Performing the Past in Aweil

by | Events, Oral History, Theatre

In April 2018, Likikiri worked with a group of actors in Aweil to perform plays inspired by oral history-inspired research at the Rift Valley Institute’s (RVI) regional chiefs’ meeting in Northern Bahr al-Ghazal.

The research, conducted by Dr. Nicki Kindersley with Joseph Diing, focused on Chiefs’ and other leaders’ war-time strategies of survival in Northern Bahr al-Ghazal.

The plays produced from this research touched on topics such as northern migration (to Darfur and Khartoum), famine, hunger, and the politics of food distribution, and border disputes especially between pastoralists and farmers, and among returnees and those who stayed behind.
